Memphis weather is classified as humid subtropical with continental influences; there are four distinct seasons with cold winters and hot summers.

Memphis weather during Winter

Weather in Memphis during winter is characterized by very cold freezing temperatures, as winds blowing in from the Gulf of Mexico lead to drastic swings in conditions.  Winters are mild to frosty, with daily average highs and lows in January of 9.2 °C and −0.4 °C. Snowfall occurs periodically in winter, with an average annual snowfall of 120 mm. Ice storms are hazardous, pulling tree limbs down onto power lines causing disturbances.

Memphis weather during Summer

Summer Memphis weather is almost exclusively sunny, sticky and humid due to the moisture influence coming from the Gulf of Mexico. However, temperatures hardly ever reach great heights due to the moisture summer feel hotter than it is. On occasion some summer weather in Memphis is influenced by conditions that arrive from Texas causing patterns to be very hot and arid. July and August are the hottest months with average daily highs of 33.4 °C and lows of 22.7 °C. During summer afternoon and evening showers are common, but relief from the heat is short lived, usually only lasting for an hour.

Memphis weather during Autumn

Weather in Memphis during the autumn months is characterized by mild, sunny, dry days, but can still be quite hot until October. Towards the end of autumn Memphis weather begins to become cooler and wet, rainfalls peaking again in November and December.

Memphis weather during Spring

Springtime weather in Memphis is warm but wet; it is also very unpredictable with thunderstorms and blustery winds. The high percentage of precipitation (1,390 mm annually) is mainly the result of thunderstorms that keep Memphis green. On average, Memphis experiences 64% sunshine per year.
